Not what I expected at all

I had a friend from out of state swinging through town and we met in NYC for lunch and a couple of drinks. We are eating at the bar and I see further down that Mike Myers (Snl, Austin Powers, etc) is at the other end of the bar watching a soccer game on the television and drinking a beer. I had never encountered a celebrity before, and didn't want to be some obtrusive asshole. But prior to paying our tab I walked over and said "hey Mike, I'm a big fan, can I buy you a beer?" And without even turning to look at me he says " I can afford my own drinks asshole, save your money for my next movie". I stood there speechless for a second and embarassedly turned back to my spot at the bar, we paid our tab and split without saying a word. I really felt like a dick head, haha.

honestly, are you sure that the guy at the end of the bar wasn't someone who just really looked like Myers? seems so unlikely he'd behave that way, but could totally imagine a look-alike, incensed by another interruption of regular life, responding that way

Seems weird that he'd think you'd want to see his next movie after being treated that way. I'm with the other person who commented earlier...maybe it was an annoyed look-a-like. If it really was him, then he is incredibly arrogant and obnoxious.

Why do people think offering to buy a celebrity a drink is some kind of great opening gambit towards something else? You wouldn't buy a non famous stranger a drink simply for existing would you? So why bother when the person is a multi millionaire.

I completely understand your point. If I ever met a celebrity and offered to buy them a drink, it would be to thank them for making a movie I really liked or some shit. Not be cause I have some school girl crush on them.
